How can you possibly keep up with grading every single assignment?
How do you keep up with grading every assignment? Honestly – you really can’t. There isn’t enough time in the day to do it all.
So what is the solution?
You don’t have to grade them all!
You need to focus on the list of assessments you made at the beginning of the school year or quarter. The one that meets your district/school requirements. Those are your responsibility.
(Haven’t made an assessment schedule for the year yet? Click Here!)
The rest? Homework, classwork, study guides, review activities?
Let the students grade them! This takes time off your plate, gets assignments graded, AND gives students IMMEDIATE feedback.
So how do you let them grade?
- Teach your expectations for grading their own work.
- Have all students put their pencils under their chairs and give everyone a colored pencil.
- Give every student the same color (for example, this assessment will be graded in purple).
- Review the assessment as an entire class.
- Have the students write the correct answer if they missed it.
- When students are finished, have them write any questions they have or a note to themselves about their results. (For example, “Can you help me organize my notebook the correct way?” “Great job!” “Don’t forget to copy your homework every morning.”)
- You can also have them give a quick check with a smiley face, sad face, or a straight line face (if they think they just did ok). This allows you to quickly glance at work to review and plan for reteaching.
I hope this will help ease a little more of your to-do list. What other ways have you found to get through all of the papers you need to grade? Just comment below!
