Transforming My Teaching Resources to Make Money Online
You love your job. You love changing the world, but you struggle to find a way to fit it all in and still pay all of the bills? You get so bogged in the day-to-day. The running from teaching to tutoring or waiting tables. If so, I get it. I’ve been right there with you.
I’ve closed the bar after Monday Night Football only to run home to add the final touches of a lesson plan and then have to wake up 5 hours later to get ready for school. I’ve worked 30 hours at Barnes and Noble to fill the gap. I’ve tutored after school.
It wasn’t until I returned from an unpaid maternity leave that I learned about selling my teaching resources online. With a baby at home, I was no longer able to do those other part time jobs. I took the time while she was sleeping to try out a new way to make ends meet. I began selling my teaching resources online. And guess what – I made more money doing that from the comfort of my home than I ever did at the other part-time jobs. And not only did it help pay the bills, but it made me a better teacher.
3 Ways That Selling My Teaching Resources Made Me A Better Teacher
- I was less tired. Selling my teaching resources online gave me an outlet for my creativity and it took the place of those part time jobs. No more running cash registers or staying late waiting table for Monday Night Football. I could come home, jump in my yoga pants and create in the comfort of my own home. I was able to channel my creativity into something that I enjoyed and could take pride in writing.
- By creating these resources I began to think more about what students wanted. If I was going to spend time creating these, I wanted them to be useful and exciting. I wanted to make it engaging and get student in the driver’s seat of their learning.
- I wrote better plans. By planning for other teachers, I began thinking of all of the ways the lesson could go wrong. I began to anticipate what might happen and began writing for those twists and turns. I learned more about the whole process of creating lesson plans. I went deeper than just filling in the blanks on the lesson plan form. I began to explore new developments, new technologies, and new ideas for engaging learners. I took what many others hated (poetry) and turned it into lessons that kids loved and teachers enjoyed teaching.
The greatest part is calculating the numbers of kids I now teach. There are students all over the world learning about poetry. They are now part of what I’ve created. My lessons go beyond the classes I teach in person and my expertise can help teachers and students around the world. I love hearing from teachers in other countries that have used my ideas.
