The Easy Way to Teach Following Directions

Looking for ideas on how to get your students to follow directions? Here are a few fun ways to get on track.

If you had a dollar for every time you asked, “Did you read or listen to the directions?” you could retire within in the first 6 months!  So how do you get students to start listening and following directions?  Try this following directions activity.

Following Directions Activity Directions:

Get your students to read directions with this simple following directions test. The key is the written directions. The directions say to put your name on the paper and turn it in.

That’s it!  Simple to follow and no stress in grading.

You will have one kid who will get it. Tell that student thank you for taking the test and tell them they got a 100%. Then send them on an errand out of the room or to the Media Center for about 10 minutes (until the rest start to figure it out).

Once that student leaves the rest of the class will start scrambling to figure it out, but few (if any) will actually go back and read the directions.

At least you will get a good laugh from those who are hopping on one foot and singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”
